Customers often ask if we can just replace the part of the fence that is visible, namely the pickets and the 2×4’s, but leave the posts. This is almost always not a good idea for several reasons:
1. The posts are the foundation of the fence. This would be like rebuilding a house on an old rotten foundation. Not a good idea. What you cannot see below ground is the rot from groundwater.
2. What you see above ground is the most expensive part of the fence. Reusing posts is going to save only a few dollars per foot on a job that will cost $20 to $28 per foot. That is not a wise use of funds.
3. The finished fence will not be straight because old posts are never still in a straight line.
4. It will void any type of warranty.
So you see why reusing old posts on a fence is not a good idea.
